Earlier this year, five major American art museums and the Outdoor Advertising Association of America announced Art Everywhere US, a venture to bring American art classics to billboards across the nation. In a little over a week, the project will launch with a billboard in Times Square.
The project is being called the largest outdoor art show in the world. According to The Associated Press, there will be 58 different pieces of art that will show up on billboards and buses and in subway stations. The first billboard will be unveiled on Aug. 4 in New York’s Times Square.
As we reported back in April, when the project was first announced, the art was picked by an online vote from 100 pieces.
The actual works of art reside in the Dallas Museum of Art, New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C., the Art Institute of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
The artwork includes Andy WArhol’s Campbell’s Soup Can, Edward Hopper’s Early Sunday Morning and Roy Lichtenstein’s Look Mickey. It will be particularly inspiring to see Jasper Johns’ Three Flags on a giant billboard.
