Nigerian military kills dozens of insurgents in Borno

Nigerian troops have killed dozens of insurgents believed to be members of the extremist group Boko Haram.

CCTV Africa reported that the army said 53 insurgents, believed to be part of the group, were killed after a military base was attacked in Damboa, Borno state.

Nigerian military spokesman Major-General Chris Olukolade said in a statement that six soldiers were also killed in the fighting on Friday night, Bloomberg News noted.

“The terrorists had stormed the troops’ bases and police locations while most of the troops were out on patrol of surrounding villages,” the statement said.

Boko Haram is the same group that took credit for kidnapping more than 200 students from the Government Girls Secondary School back in April.

When the Nigerian government was unable to locate the missing girls, officials from the U.S. and the U.K began assisting in the search to help find them. Other countries have also offered their assistance.

Some of the girls were able to escape their captors, but the majority are still missing.
