Police arrested hundreds of demonstrators after a pro-democracy march in Hong Kong on Wednesday morning.
The Los Angeles Times reported that a total of 511 people were arrested after they refused to leave the streets following the large demonstration.
Authorities said the arrest were for unlawful assembly and preventing police from carrying out their duties.
“The public meeting on Chater Road on July 1 should have concluded according to the finishing time stated in [the permit letter]. After repeated advice and warnings by police including the display of warning banners, those refusing to leave in fact took part in an unauthorized assembly,” Hong Kong police said in a statement.
The arrest actually came during a sit-in organized by students and supporters of the civic group Occupy Central with Peace and Love.
CNN noted that over 98,000 people took part in the march and organizers said over 500,000 participated. However, police have claimed that the number was actually closer to 100,000.
