A senior Obama administration aide suggested on Friday that President Barack Obama's plans to go it alone in regards to immigration reform could trigger impeachment talk amongst Republicans.
At a breakfast put together by the Christian Science Monitor, senior advisor Dan Pfeiffer spoke with reporters and said, "The president acting on immigration reform will certainly up the likelihood that [Republicans] would contemplate impeachment at some point."
Pfeiffer noted that while people publicly laughed off Sarah Palin's impeachment comments, he believes it could happen, despite Speaker of the House John Boehner saying he is against the idea, but into suing the president.
Boehner's spokesman Michael Steel released a statement noting that Pfeiffer's comments are nothing more than a "fundraising exercise for Democrats." The e-mailed statement also added, "It is telling, and sad, that a senior White House official is focused on political games, rather than helping these kids and securing the border."
For the moment though, Republicans are more focused on authorizing a lawsuit regarding Obama and his healthcare bill, Reuters. They also might be wary of moving towards impeachment as it could blow back just as they are trying to take control of the Senate.
With little movement on Congress regarding immigration reform, Obama has made it known he plans to use executive action and essentially go it alone.
Opponents have complained the president is overreaching with his constant executive orders, yet he has been overall been fairly restrained, compared to previous presidents, such as Ronald Regan, who issued 213 in his first term alone.
