Friday at the box office went to new film The Purge: Anarchy, which dominated the other two new wide release films, Sex Tape and Planes: Fire & Rescue.
The Purge: Anarchy opened with $13 million on Friday, which is a good start, but down $3 million from the original film, Forbes reports. The Universal film, starring Frank Grillo, is expected to gross $27 million for the weekend, which is decent given that the film only cost $9 million to make.
Still, the horror-thriller is expected to eventually cede the top box office spot for the weekend to last weekend's king, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $73 million. The 20th Century Fox sequel grossed $10.4 million on Friday and is expected to just edge past Purge 2 for a $31 million haul.
Planes: Fire & Rescue has started off slowly, pulling in only $6.3 million on Friday. The Disney animated sequel is likely to hit $18 million for the weekend, down from the original in 2013.
Following behind is Jason Segel and Cameron Diaz's Sex Tape, which earned $5.7 million in its first full day, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The poorly-received Sony comedy is projected to be lucky if it makes it to $15 million for the weekend, which probably would place it in fourth.
Last weekend's strong limited release film Boyhood expanded into 34 theaters and continues to perform strongly. The Richard Linklater film grossed $270,000 Friday and will earn just under $1 million at $900,000 for the weekend.
