Robert Downey Jr. took a year off from Tony Stark, but that doesn’t mean moviegoers are missing him. He had a role in Jon Favreau’s Chef and will be returning in The Judge. That film, which co-stars Robert Duvall, has been picked to open the Toronto International Film Festival.
The movie was added to this year’s gala presentations on Friday. According to Entertainment Weekly, it will be screened on Sept. 4, the first day of the festival.
A trailer for the film surfaced in June. In The Judge, Downey plays a hotshot lawyer who only defends wealthy criminals. He discovers that his mother has died and goes back to the small town where his father (Duvall) is a judge. When his father is accused of murder, Downey goes up to bat for him in court. Billy Bob Thornton and Melissa Leo also star.
The full TIFF lineup was announced earlier this week. Festivities will include two new Reese Witherspoon movies, Wild and The Good Lie; as well as The Drop with one of James Gandolfini’s last performances.
TIFF runs from Sept. 4 to Sept. 14.
