Police have charged a South Dakota man who they say kidnapped a two-year-old boy and barricaded himself inside a residence prompting an hours-long standoff with authorities.

According to the Associated Press, on Wednesday, Raymond Cuny was charged with first-degree kidnapping and two counts of second-degree burglary.

Cuny was taken into custody Tuesday after the six-hour standoff.

NBC News noted that law enforcement officials said officers were called around 4 p.m. local time for a reported burglary in which the suspect fled to a nearby house. Police said that the family inside was able to get away but Cuny took the toddler hostage.

Authorities evacuated several homes in the area and had on-and-off communication with the 32-year-old suspect while he and the young boy were still inside the house.

Eventually, a special response team was able to gain access to the home and rescue the child who was unharmed.

Cuny was taken to the Pennington County Jail where he is being held without bond.
