ESPN announced on Tuesday that Stephen A. Smith was suspended for a week for his comments regarding domestic violence.

In a statement on the First Take website, ESPN said, "We will continue to have constructive dialogue on this important topic. Stephen's comments last Friday do not reflect our company's point of view."

ESPN also posted a video of Smith's apology over his comments and said he is someone who "recognizes his mistakes and has a deeper appreciation of our company values."

The sports network noted that the co-anchor will not be on either First Take or ESPN Radio until next Wednesday.

In an apology made Monday, which can be seen below, Smith said that his comments were "the most egregious error of my career."

As previously reported, Smith made the comments while discussing NFL running back Ray Rice who was suspended only two games for assaulting his then-fiancee Janay Palmer.

While speaking on First Take last Friday, Smith used the word "provoke" and made it sound like it could be a woman's fault for being assaulted.
