To many the thought of having one tooth removed sounds painful, well a teenager in India was in immense pain and needed to have 232 extracted from his mouth.
According to USA Today, on Monday, surgeons in Mumbai opened up a tumor in 17-year-old Ashik Gavai's mouth and found hundreds of the teeth-like structures.
Little pearl-like teeth started coming out, one by one. Initially, we were collecting them, they were really like small white pearls. We counted 232 teeth, Dr. Sunanda Dhiware, head of the Mumbai hospital’s dental department told BBC.
The Indian teen was found to be suffering from a condition called odontoma, a benign dental tumor that lodged 232 denticles inside.
Dhiware and a team of doctors performed the seven-hour surgery and said that the boy’s jaw will heal, but his condition could come back. For now though, Gavai’s has 28 teeth.
Humans usually have up to 32 teeth in their mouth. Those teeth are the 8 incisors, 4 canines, 8 premolars, and 12 molars, counting wisdom teeth.
