A 15-year-old California teenager has died after she tried to recover her iPhone from a man who stole it.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Ruby Rubio was walking down the street with her younger sibling when a man approached them and snatched her iPhone. The crook then jumped into the passenger seat of a waiting car, but Rubio chased him and grabbed onto the back of the vehicle as it drove off.
The teen was unable to hold on after the driver attempted to shake her off and she fell onto the street and was critically injured.
"As they drove off, they swerved, she was hanging onto the trunk," said Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. "She fell off, struck her head and that's how this started."
The teen was transported to an area hospital where she died two days later.
CBSLA reported that police are now seeking the suspect who is described as a Hispanic male in his late 20s to early 30s, 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a white tank top, jeans and a black baseball cap. The car that he got away in was a light gray or silver Pontiac.
Anyone with information on the suspect or the vehicle is asked to contact authorities.
