Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams had undeniable chemistry in The Notebook, which paved the way for an-off screen relationship, but director Nick Cassavetes has revealed that it wasn’t always rosy on set with the actors.

Gosling and McAdams really got into it one day after Gosling threatened to pull the plug on doing a scene with his co-star.

“Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set,” Cassavetes told Vh1 about their fight.

“Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me?” the director recalled Gosling asking him, adding, “I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.”

They then privately hashed it out in a separate room with just one producer and Cassavetes, and he admitted it “wasn’t smooth sailing” after that, but “smoother sailing.”

“They started screaming and yelling at each other. I walked out,” he explained. “I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open.”

Last month, in celebration of The Notebook’s 10-year anniversary, McAdams’ original audition tape was released. Another video showed the chemistry Gosling and McAdams shared together during one a featurette.
