Trey Songz has earned his second No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 album chart, breezing past Ed Sheeran’s X.
The R&B singer released Trigga last week, which sold 105,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan data from Billboard. That’s exactly 30,000 less copies than his previous album, Chapter V, which also started at No. 1 in 2012. It is Songz’s smallest debut since Trey Day only started with 73,000 copies in 2007.
Last week, Sheeran topped Billboard with 210,000 copies, but X took a tumble in week two, which is standard practice for No. 1s this year. X only sold 53,000 copies in its second week.
In The Lonely Hour by Sam Smith had a smaller decrease, dropping to No. 3 with 45,000 copies sold. Seether’s Isolate and Medicate only sold 37,000 copies in its first week, but that was enough for the No. 4 spot.
Incredibly, the Froze soundtrack scored a 28th consecutive week in the top 5 with 37,000 copies sold. It has been in at least the Top 10 since the Dec. 28 chart.
The rest of the Top 10 features MAGIC!’s Don’t Kill The Magic (36,000 copies); Miranda Lambert’s Platinum (25,000); Lana Del Rey’s Ultraviolence (25,000); Robin Thicke’s Paula (24,000); and Colt Ford’s Thanks for Listening (23,000).
You read that right. A year after “Blurred Lines” dominated the radio and the album sold 177,000 copies in its first week, Thicke failed to follow that up with a strong release. Palua earned his worst debut since The Evolution of Robin Thicke started with 20,000 in 2007.
Smith held the No. 1 spot on the Digital Songs chart with “Stay With Me.” The track sold 185,000 downloads. While MAGIC!’s album failed to impress, “Rude” sold 180,000 downloads.
