A Guardsman in Utah shot two people in an apartment off the Utah State University campus early Monday morning before driving to another home and killing himself.

Jared Tolman, 23, broke into the Logan apartment of two college students he knew before shooting them both several times, The Associated Press reports. The victims are 19-year-old Mackenzie Madden and 26-year-old Johnathan Jacob Sadler.

After killing both, the Guardsman drove several miles to a friend's house where he then killed himself. Police report that those in the house at the time called 911.

According to the Salt Lake Tribune, Tolman and Madden were texting ahead of the shooting, but the contents of the messages have not yet been revealed.

National Guard spokesman Lt. Col. Stephen Fairbourn said that during Tolman's five years with the 19th Special Forces Unit support battalion, he never had any problems. He worked as a laundry technician.

"We certainly feel the loss," the spokesman said. "We send our condolences to all of the families of all that are affected. We are supporting and assisting in the investigation as much as possible.

Madden was majoring in sociology and working on a criminal justice minor. Logan police Lt. Brad Franke, who spoke with reporters, said she had interned with the department and even researched other police departments' "active shooter" response policies.
