Many supporters of legalizing marijuana for medical purposes have been evident in the nation's capital, Washington D.C.

According to The Washington Post, over 15 years ago, activists around D.C. gathered signatures to give voters a choice of whether it should be the nation's District to legalize medical cannabis.
People who organized the Initiative 71, which is a measure that enables the District to fully legalize the substance, are about to announce this week that they are closing in on 60,000 signatures. Polls clearly show that District voters support legalization by a ratio of 2 to 1. Since this city already has medical cannabis dispensaries, it is making attempts to loosen the barriers so that doctors can recommend marijuana for any ailment.
The Raw Story reveals that D.C. has enough signatures for a November vote. The proposed measure would allow people over 21 to possess up to 2 ounces or roughly 56 grams of marijuana for personal use which means that they could grow up to 3 plants per household.

According to an article from Guardian Liberty Voice, the FDA estimated that 38 percent of Americans have used cannabis with over 22 million people consuming the substance annually. It has had an important impact on America's culture and there are a lot of aspects behind the science of getting stoned and the interaction of marijuana with the brain. The scientific explanation behind getting high from smoking medical marijuana enables scientists to find new solutions to tweak the herb and extracts its medical benefits, for example, cannabidiol which is a compound in cannabis that has anti-tumor effects according to the National Cancer Institute.
