One person was killed and at least seven other people suffered injuries early Friday afternoon after a lightning strike in the Rocky Mountain National Park.
Eastern Colorado has been dealing with a heavy storm system throughout the day, which featured plenty of lightning and a deluge of rain, nearly two inches every hour. The conditions have been called "monsoon-like," by National Park Service officials.
The area has been dealing with storms over the past week, NBC News reports, as two fires in the park were started due to lightning.
The lightning strike which killed the women also sent two people to the hospital by ambulance, while five others would admit themselves for treatment, park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson said. There has been no word on their condition or identity has been released.
According to The Associated Press, the bolt hit shy of 1:30 p.m. at the Ute Crossing Trail in the park, which is off the paved Trail Ridge Road.
