Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight hits theaters this weekend and while he doesn’t often do a lot of promotion for his films himself, he did make his first podcast appearance.
Allen sat down with Josh Horowitz on HappySadConfused for just over 30 minutes while he chewed on his first vanilla Tootsie roll. While Allen and Horowitz do cover several topics, they do not mention the elephant in the room, the controversy with Dylan Farrow, who has accused Allen of abuse, notes The Hollywood Reporter.
The topics that they do cover are focused on film and Horowitz’s father, who knew Allen.
The writer/director of timeless films like Manhattan, Hannah And Her Sisters and Annie Hall revealed that he’s mostly disappointed with his films. “I am always disappointed — there is always a big difference in what one sets out to make and what one ends up with,” he said.
He said that he’s never worked with Robert De Niro, Dustin Hoffman or Jack Nicholson because they are usually always busy. In fact, Nicholson was the actor he had in mind while writing Michael Caine’s Oscar-winning part in Hannah.
“Now I am working with Joaquin Phoenix, who is a great actor, and Sean Penn [but] I just haven't had the opportunity to work with some of our greatest — Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson — they're as great as it gets,” he said. “I would love to work with him [Kevin Spacey] if I had anything for him I would do it in a minute.”
Allen also talked about the finances of his films. He doesn’t tell his backers anything about the movie and demands full control over marketing.
“Only one in a few are very profitable,” he said of his films. “I don't think it is a good investment!”
Magic in the Moonlight, which stars Colin Firth and Emma Stone, opens on Friday.
