Star Trek fans know that, in addition to starring as Spock, Leonard Nimoy would be prolific director for the series as well, having helmed the third and fourth Star Trek movies, The Search for Spock and The Voyage Home, respectively.
Now that the position of playing Spock has gone from Nimoy to Zachary Quinto (despite Nimoy making cameos in the past two movies), some have wondered if Quinto would follow in his elder's steps and take over directing duties for Star Trek 3, now that J.J. Abrams has his hands full directing Star Wars: Episode VII. While Quinto would like to step behind the camera more, directing the new blockbuster sequel are not in his cards at the moment.
His quote directly, gathered from Trek Movie.com,, are as follows.
"I want to direct," he said. "I’m already producing, and producing at increasingly on a high-profile level. I haven’t yet directed. That’s something I aspire to, but I doubt that I would feel confident enough to start in that realm."
The projects he is talking about in terms of producing above are movies like the Academy Award nominated Margin Call, which he also starred in, All Is Lost and Breakup at a Wedding. He has also produced a variety of short films and some upcoming projects, including the documentary series The Chair.
In addition to this, Quinto mentioned how long he sees his and his fellow cast members commitments to Star Trek, adding, "I feel like we all signed on for three movies, so we’re coming up to the conclusion of that commitment. It will be very interesting to see how our relationships to the franchise evolve beyond that point."
At the moment, writer Roberto Orci is supposed to direct the next Star Trek, but the deal is not yet official. In fact, at the moment, he and some other writers are still in the process of writing the movie, which is said to have the crew moving towards their "five year mission," as first mentioned in the beginning of the show's opening. Considering that Orci has no experience directing yet either, it isn't completely crazy to have imagined Quinto taking over for Abrams either.
