An officer was alerted by residents of the Florida neighborhood Port St. Lucie, which had a case of several missing cats. The culprit behind the missing cats was found hiding in a brush.
The snake was found by Sargent John Holman who responded to the scene around 7:20 a.m after reports of a large snake. The body of a dead cat in an empty lot led the officer to walk into a brush where the snake was hiding, reported WTSP.
Holman did not expect to find discover a 12-foot-long, and 120 pound Burmese python in the brush. Holman did not harm the snake. Instead he called for backup officers to help get the snake out of hiding.
According to CBS News, the snake belongs to a person living nearby. Although it is illegal to own a python in Florida, as of yet no charges have been filed against the person.
The python is a species which has populated the Everglades in Southern Florida. They are suspected of developing from pets that were released into the wild, and have been eating mammals native to the Everglades.
