Authorities have said that at least 33 people are dead and another 41 were injured after two tour buses collided in Egypt on Friday morning.

According to the Independent, the head-on collision happened just over 30 miles away from the destination Sharm El-Sheik.

Egypt’s state-run news agency MENA, reported that one of the buses was headed to the popular destination while the other was headed towards Cairo when they crashed into one another.

Investigators traveled to the crash site to look into what may have caused the accident. Some media outlets have said that one of the drivers fell asleep behind the wheel, however, Egyptian officials have not yet confirmed that.

The Daily News Egypt noted that the injured tourists include Ukrainian, Saudi and Yemeni citizens.

Thirty ambulances arrived at the scene to transport the passengers to local hospitals.

Fatal traffic accidents are quite common in the country as many of the roads and rails have a poor safety record.
