A 9-year-old boy was stabbed several times by a 12-year-old in Kentwood, Michigan on Monday and passed away that night.
Michael Conner Verkerke survived the stabbing incident, but later died of his injuries that night in the hospital, WZZM-TV reports.
The boy who stabbed Verkerke called the police from a neighbor's phone and turned himself in. He has not yet been charged and a motive is being investigated.
"I was getting my ladder," neighbor Glenn Stacy said, "and this young man came and asked me if he could use my phone. I gave him my phone, and I heard him tell the 911 operator, 'I just stabbed someone. Come and get me. I want to die.'"
Verkerke and the 12-year-old were together with two other kids when the stabbing occurred. Afterwards, the victim was able to run with the other kids to his home, according to The Associated Press.
When police first showed up at the scene, they headed towards the victim's place first, while the 12-year-old yelled they needed to come arrest him, the Grand Rapids Press notes.
Stacy said the 12-year-old told the 911 dispatcher he felt no one loved him and that he had "taken many pills" before the stabbing.
