ABC news anchor Elizabeth Vargas has re-entered rehab for her alcoholism after publicly acknowledging her problem this year.
We previously reported that Vargas discussed her alcoholism with ABC News. In her 20/20 interview with George Stephanopoulos, Vargas explained how acknowledging her alcoholism made her feel like a failure and called the act of attempting to cover up her problem "exhausting."
Now it appears that Vargas' problem has been aggravated yet again after she checked herself into rehab while on vacation in California. According to The New York Daily News, the 51-year-old released a statement Sunday saying, "As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process."
Vargas was apologetic for the difficulties she was having with her drinking. "I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time," she said.
This is not Vargas' first stint in rehab, we reported in November that Vargas was spending time in rehab, she checked herself out a short time later. ABC has been supportive of Vargas' decision to seek treatment. "Nothing is more important than Elizabeth's health and well-being and we stand squarely behind her. Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return," said ABC representative Julie Townsend in a statement.
