Amy Winehouse was already immortalized by her music, but an artist has been given the greenlight to make sure she lives forever in another way - with a life-size statue. The piece will be located in her hometown of Camden, England.
Although conservationists were wary about honoring the singer just three years after her tragic death at age 27, the Camden News Journal reports that Town Hall planners gave the stamp of approval on tuesday.
The bronze statue, designed by Scott Easton and simply titled Amy, will be looking down a balcony at the Roadhouse venue. NME notes that the location was likely picked to keep fans from going to Winehouse’s former home in Camden quare, where she was found dead.
In a statement to Sky News, Winehouse’s father, Mitch, said he was happy with the decision.
“Amy was in love with Camden, and it is the place her fans from all over the world associate her with,” Mitch said. “The family have always been keen to have a memorial for her in the place she loved the most, which will provide fans a place to visit and bring extra custom to local businesses.”
Winehouse remains best known for her acclaimed breakthrough 2006 album Back to Black, which featured the hit title track and “Rehab.” She only released two completed albums in her lifetime, with a posthumous album called Lioness released months after her death.
