Earlier this month, Warner Brothers released a slate of films that included 9 untitled DC Comics properties. While we can only speculate what characters we’ll be seeing on the silver screen, it would seem that the King of Atlantis is on WB’s radar.
Rumors of Aquaman appearing in Batman v. Superman via a small cameo appearance has been circulating the web almost since the film went into production, and Game of Thrones alum Jason Momoa has been all but officially confirmed to be donning the green and orange spandex.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, WB has brought on two screenwriters—Gangster Squad’s Will Beall and 300: Rise of an Empire’s Kurt Johnstad—to work on two different adaptations of the character. WB will then select the script with the most promise.
The obstacle that WB/DC faces in this endeavor is the negative stigma attached to the character. His goofy portrayal in the '70s superhero cartoon Super Friends—and the ensuing parodies from the likes of Family Guy and Robot Chicken—has led many to write the character off.
Zack Snyder recognized this, and took time out of his day on set of Batman v. Superman to defend Aquaman on a Detroit radio show (which many took as a hint that Arthur Curry will, in fact, be in the film). With the casting of Momoa, and the pedigree of the two writers attached to the developing film, it would seem WB sees potential in a darker take on the character.
Which of the 9 dates Aquaman will fall on remains a mystery. You can expect to see him in some capacity in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and as a member of the ensemble in Justice League.
