Ben Affleck is ready to go on the awards circuit again, but not for a movie he directed. This fall, he will out promoting Gone Girl, the new film from director David Fincher, based on Gillian Flynn’s bestseller.
Affleck spoke about the new film in his cover interview with Entertainment Weekly. He said that being at the center of tabloid scrutiny helped him prepare for the film, which makes perfect sense. As anyone who has read the novel knows, the media is a big part of Flynn’s story about a man accused of his wife’s murder.
“It wasn’t something I had to do a lot of research for,” Affleck, who was once hounded by paparazzi during his relationship with Jennifer Lopez, told EW. “I knew what it was like to have the tabloid world paying attention to me and ascribing negative motivations to whatever I might be engaging in. I knew what it was to be cast in a soap opera I had no control over.”
EW also spoke with Affleck about Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Everyone still remembers the backlash Warner Bros. faced after Affleck was named the new Batman, but Affleck has said that he’s ready to take the cape and cowl. The actor said that the studio did ask him if he was sure he wanted to do this, considering how sensitive fans are.
“Everyone’s entitled to their opinion,” Affleck told the magazine. “I wouldn’t have taken the part if I didn’t trust my instincts in terms of the filmmaking. I think Chris Terrio wrote a terrific script. [Zack Snyder is] a great visual director. And there’s an interesting take. I wouldn’t have done it if I didn’t think I could do it. I have the benefit of a lot of that understanding. But also, everyone is entitled to their opinion.”
Gone Girl opens on Oct. 3 and stars Affleck as Nick Dunne, with Rosamund Pike as his wife, Amy. The film will have its world premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 27.
