Sony Pictures announced Tuesday that Fury, the new World War II drama starring Brad Pitt, is now opening a month earlier than previously planned.
The film was originally set for release on Nov. 14. However, as Box Office Mojo’s schedule now shows, Fury will now hit theaters on Oct. 17.
Had Fury opened as originally planned, the movie would have had to compete with Dumb and Dumber To on the same weekend. It would also have likely disappeared the next week, since The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 opens on Nov. 21. It would also have run up against Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which opens on Nov. 7.
Now, Fury will just have to deal with Universal’s Dracula Untold and the animated Book of Life on Oct. 17. The following week, St. Vincent with Bill Murray and Universal’s horror movie Ouija open.
Fury was directed by David Ayer and also stars Shia LaBeouf. Pitt plays the leader of a tank squad fighting remaining Nazis at the end of World War II. A full trailer was released in June. It is expected to be an awards contender and it is far too early to know if audience response had anything to do with Sony’s move. It was more likely just to give the film a better chance by avoiding The Hunger Games.
