A Democratic California senator was pulled over by police early Friday morning in Sacramento for suspicion of drunk driving.
Sheriff's Sgt. Lisa Bowman said that Sen. Ben Hueso was stopped and arrested by cops at 2:39 a.m. The 44-year-old posted $1,500 bail just before noon, The Associated Press reports.
"I think I have the right to pursue my innocence," Hueso said while speaking with reporters, "and that's what I'm going to do."
According to FOX40, the state senator was picked up after he was witnessed driving the wrong way down a one-way street.
When police questioned Hueso, they said they noticed he appeared intoxicated and took him in.
The night before, Hueso attended a dinner hosted by the Latino Legislative Caucus as the current legislative session winds down. The dinner was said to have ended fairly early in the night though, with spokesman Roger Salazar saying it was over by 9 p.m.
The latest run-in with the law hurts California legislators who have been trying to rise above the recent suspensions of three other senators. Sen. Leland Yee and Ron Calderon have been accused of corruption, while Sen. Rod Wright was caught and convicted for lying about living in his district.
