A female soldier who caused a lockdown at Fort Lee Army Base on Monday has died after shooting herself in the head.

EFE noted that the sergeant 1st class veteran was pronounced dead at a Virginia hospital several hours after the shooting occurred.

As reported earlier, military officials said that the soldier entered the Combined Arms Support Command headquarters Monday morning with a gun and barricaded herself in an office. Police were in contact with her until she ultimately turned the weapon on herself and was airlifted to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center.

Now, questions remain about what sparked the 14-year vet’s rage and caused her to take her own life.

Authorities have said that the soldier’s name would not be released until after her next of kin has been notified and that the gun she entered the facility with was not a service weapon.

Several shootings have occurred at military bases over the past few years. In 2009, 13 people were killed in a shooting at Fort Hood in Texas. In April of this year, an Iraq veteran shot and killed three people and injured 16 more at the same Texas base before shooting himself. And last September, 12 people were killed and four were injured by a government contractor at a Navy Yard in Washington D.C.
