Move over, Spider-Man. There’s a new superhero coming to the Spider-Man universe.
Sony has announced a female superhero will be taking over the Spider-Man universe in a movie set for a 2017 release. The starring character has not yet been named, but some of the possibilities include Silver Sable, Black Cat, Stunner, Firestar and Spider-Woman, reports Deadline.
The script is being written by Lisa Joy Nolan, with Avi Araf and Matt Tolmach producing.
The announcement comes after Sony’s decision to revitalize the Spider-Man franchise. With the dip in the domestic audience over the years, it was clear changes had to be made to prevent the franchise from crumbling.
With the rising success of female-centric movies like The Hunger Games and Lucy, along with the Marvel’s announcement of a female Thor, a female-driven Spider-Man film appears to be a possible solution for the franchise, reports Variety.
To pave the way for the film, Sony is releasing Spider-Man spinoff Sinister Six on Nov. 11, 2016. The villain-centric film will be the first in a series of planned expansions for the franchise.
Spider-Man 3, originally slated for a 2016 release, has been pushed back to 2018 to make room for Sinister Six and the 2017 female superhero movie.
