A giant crack in the Earth opened up in the state of Sonora, Mexico, leaving residents amazed and theories of its origin arising.
According to Examiner, the crack measures more than 15 feet across the widest spot, is 30 feet deep and is more than one mile long. It was first spotted by residents who were alarmed by its appearance on Tuesday night.
Residents are worried about the crack, which have caused those driving in the area to go around it. Martin Valencia Moreno, head of the National Autonomous University of Mexico's Regional Station of the Geological Institute, assured locals that it nothing to worry about.
βIt's more something sensationalist and people like to encourage that sort of thing,β Moreno said.
The crack is believed to be a result of heavy rain in the area and not a result of an earthquake. Scientists pointed to a dry underground stream located underneath the crack, supporting the rain theory. The underground stream caused the ground to soften, and the crack to appear reported The SpreadIt.
Since it was discovered, many theories have emerged. Some have claimed the crack is a sign that God would be coming soon. Others claimed aliens planning to take over the country created the crack.
