A 9-year-old girl in Oregon was killed after a sand hole she was digging collapsed.

According to USA Today, the girl was digging a three to five foot hole in the sand on a Lincoln City beach. The girl was buried for at least five minutes after the sand collapsed on top of her.

Bystanders and family members attempted to dig her out until fire officials and police arrived on the scene. The young girl was rushed to the hospital after a nurse administered CPR. She was reported as not breathing and pronounced dead an hour later.

Police Sergeant Randy Weaver said it was a difficult rescue and tragic end, reported the Chicago Tribune.

“When you dig in the sand it keeps falling back in on itself, so it was extremely difficult to get her out,” Weaver said.

The girl was visiting the area with her family. A memorial of flowers, seashells and pinwheels was created on the beach for the girl.
