After the monstrous success of the king Godzilla, a sequel release date has been announced by Legendary and Warner Bros. for June 8, 2014.
Gareth Edwards, director of the first Godzilla, who captured the spirit of the King of Monsters as fans hoped for, will return to direct the sequel. Godzilla 2 will be scripted by Gary Whitta (Book of Eli), according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Edwards' resume is looking to match the power of the monster himself, as he is also directing a Star Wars spinoff film for 2016, before returning to continue the rebirth of Godzilla. The director's first breakthrough film was 2010's Monsters, which budgeted $500,000 to make.
The Godzilla franchise revealed at Comic-con that monsters Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah will make appearances in the sequel.
Godzilla grossed $507 million in the worldwide box office and cost $150 million to make, according to Cinema Blend.
Also promised for June 2018 is a new Pixar film, slotted a week after the Godzilla sequel. Two weeks following that, a Fox Animation film is set for release.
