Actress Helen Mirren, who is currently in the midst of promotion for her movie The Hundred Foot Journey already has her next coup planned, as the news broke that Mirren will be performing on Broadway in Peter Morgan’s The Audience next spring.
Mirren will be returning to her role as Queen Elizabeth II. In the past, the actress has received an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a play for playing the Queen in a production of The Audience in London. She also played Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen, a film that was also written by Peter Morgan as reported by Broadway World.
The Audience focuses on a series of meetings Queen Elizabeth II has had weekly throughout her monarchy with the various elected prime ministers. While the film The Queen focuses on how Queen Elizabeth responded to the death of Princess Diana, according to Entertainment Weekly, The Audience does not focus on one event but instead spans the decades of the Queen’s rule and the personalities of those who have been in power.
This production of The Audience will be directed by Stephen Daldry and will open March 8 at Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre.
