The shelling of a United Nations run school in southern Gaza was called “disgraceful” by the United States on Sunday.
The school sheltered around 3,000 Palestinians that were displaced as a result of the constant air strikes. Dozens of people were injured and 10 people were killed in and around the school, reported The Wall Street Journal.
The school was attacked on suspicions of militants operating nearby. Robert Turner, head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency said the coordinates to the school were given 33 times to the Israeli military.
“Why shoot them there if they were in front of a school?” Turner questioned.
The US condemned the attacks on the school which was supposed to be a safe place. About 260,000 civilians are being sheltered by the U.N. in the Gaza strip.
The shelling was called a violation of international law by Pierre Krahenbuhl, head of the U.N. agency for Palestinian refugees, reported the Associated Press.
Since the fight began nearly a month ago, about 1,800 Palestinians and 60 Israelis have been killed.
