It is looking more and more likely that Joaquin Phoenix, the star of recent auteur-driven acclaimed films, will be joining the Marvel Universe. A new report on Thursday suggested that Phoenix’s deal to play Doctor Strange is being finalized as we speak.

Phoenix has been linked to the project for awhile, but Marvel has yet to say anything. Just a few weeks ago, it was reported that Phoenix was under consideration. But now, Collider claims that the deal is almost done.

The site’s source says that the deal is on the one-yard line and is just about to be signed. Collider also claims that any rumors that American Hustle actor Jack Huston was in line for the part are incorrect.

Still, the wild card for Phoenix is how many movies he would sign on for. He clearly has enjoyed making films like Her, The Master, The Immigrant and Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming Inherent Vice. So, he will want to secure some wiggle room to take on other projects. Phoenix also just finished shooting a movie with Woody Allen and Emma Stone.

Back in June, Marvel hired horror director Scott Derrickson to helm the project and Jon Spathis (Prometheus) is working on the script.

It is believed that Doctor Strange is the Marvel movie slated for July 8, 2018. It will be part of Phase 3, which will start with next year’s Ant-Man.
