Joseph Gordon-Levitt is back in theaters this weekend in Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, but most comic book fans are more excited for another project he’s working on. While it is many years away, Gordon-Levitt gave a positive update on a movie adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Sandman.
In a new interview with MovieFone, JGL said that they are currently working on the script.
“It's me and [David S.] Goyer and the screenwriter and Neil Gaiman, as well as the good folks at DC and Warner Bros,” Gordon-Levitt said. “It's a really cool team of people.” He added, “It's really exciting.”
The (500) Days of Summer actor said that the script isn’t finished because of how complicated it is to turn the Sandman story into a single film. “Sandman is 75 episodic issues,” he said. “There's a reason people have been trying and failing to adapt Sandman for the past 20 years.”
When asked if he thinks Warner Bros. and DC Comics finally have the right team together to do it, he replied, “You know, we're still in the middle of it, so I don't want to make any claims, but I think we've got the right ideas.”
Earlier this month, Gordon-Levitt made similar comments about the project, noting how difficult it is to condense all that material into a film.
JGL also said that he is really excited for Rian Johnson’s work on Star Wars. The actor and director worked together on Brick and Looper and he’s sure Johnson is “going to rock it.”
Still, Gordon-Levitt hasn’t asked Johnson for a cameo just yet, “But I am certain that they are going to be great movies.”
