According to Inside Movies, the Lonely Island crew, Andy Samberg, Akiva Schaffer, and Jorma Taccone were renowned for Saturday Night Live digital shorts such as “Lazy Sunday,” and “D–k in a Box.” The team is now deciding to produce and feature in a Apatow's co-produced Universal film . The movie is set in the world of music and it seems to be a fair choice since the Lonely Island team released 3 studio albums. Their song “Everything Is Awesome” became a viral hit from The Lego Movie in February.
USA Today noted that besides the band's silly music videos on Saturday Night Live, some of their popular videos include"YOLO," featuring Adam Levine and Kendrick Lamar, "Jack Sparrow," featuring Michael Bolton, "Motherlover," featuring Justin Timberlake, and "I'm on a Boat," featuring T-Pain, which ranked 56 on the Billboard Hot 100 list.
The upcoming film will be co-directed by Schaffer and Taccone since both have experience behind the camera. Schaffer produced Hot Rod and The Watch whereas Taccone directed MacGruber, Samberg’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and a few episodes of Parks and Recreation
