Meg Ryan and rocker John Mellencamp have split after over three years of dating. The couple reportedly called it quits because they were having a long distance relationship.

Ryan, 52, lives in New York but Mellencamp has vowed to live in his home state of Indiana forever.

"It was the distance," a source told People of the cause of their split.

They started dating in 2010 after the father of five’s split from his wife of 18 years, Elaine.

In December, Mellencamp told Rolling Stone he was “too sensitive” to live in the Big Apple, ruling out any move to be with his girlfriend.

"I can't see poor people. I can't see the suffering. I can't see the trash on the streets,” he said. “I don't like it for [Ryan],” he also said of the constant paparazzi presence. Ryan hasn't done a film since 2008's The Women.

"I'm not leaving Indiana. I'm going to die here," he declared.

In November, Mellencamp will release his 22nd album Plain Spoken, while Ryan is reuniting with her frequent co-star, Tom Hanks, in Ithaca, which is her directorial debut and he will be executive producing.
