Michael Bay’s movies may not get critical acclaim, but the prolific master of explosions has had a remarkable summer. Now, he’s looking to the future, which may include a Transformers movie not directed by Bay.
In an interview with USA Today, which was supposed to focus on how great these past few months have been for him, Bay mentions that he is not going to direct the next Transformers movie. There’s no mention of who will replace him, but it looks like Bay is ready to move on.
“There's kind of a new chapter, a new direction in movies I want to make,” Bay said. “I have a lot of stories to tell. And it's about flexing new muscles.”
In addition to Transformers: Age of Extinction, Bay had two other films hit theaters this summer that he produced - The Purge: Anarchy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All three films were ripped by critics, but he doesn’t care and neither does Paramount. The studio just extended their first-look deal with Bay.
“People can hate. It's fine. To me, the only people that know anything is the audience,” Bay told USA Today.
Bay isn’t even done yet with this year. His Oujia horror film opens on Oct. 24. Next year, Project Almanac (previously known as Welcome To Tomorrow) finally hits theaters on Jan. 30.
