Michael Cera now has something in common with the most popular music star in the world, Beyonce. The actor, known better for his performances in Superbad and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, unleashed a secret album on the world this month. While it wasn’t met with the same kind of earth-shattering response that Beyonce got, it was still a surprise.
The album, titled true that, showed up online earlier this week and features 18 tracks with the kind of whimsical titles you may expect from him. It was posted on BandCamp and can be streamed for free.
true that even got some extra publicity, when his Superbad co-star pointed it out on Twitter. “My great friend Michael Cera not only is a brilliant actor, he also makes great music,” Hill wrote.
Now that the album is finally getting some extra attention, Cera sat down with The Associated Press and admitted that Beyonce’s surprise album release did inspire him a bit.
“I didn’t want anyone to take it seriously or think that I was taking it seriously by it being a big thing,” the Arrested Development star said. “It’s there now. Now people can hear the stuff I’ve spent time with and care about for a long time.”
Cera said that the music was made to essentially cure boredom. He said he used GarageBand to put the tracks together and included dialogue from movies and other sounds.
“I think it has some value in that sense. It’s honest. It’s just an effort,” he said of true that. “I’m limited by many things — my abilities, my imagination and my technology.”
