Authorities said that an F-15C fighter jet crashed in a forest in western Virginia on Wednesday.

USA Today reported that military officials said the one-person jet went down in Virginia's George Washington and Jefferson National Forest.

The whereabouts of the pilot and therefore his condition, is not yet known.

FOX News noted that Becky Coynter of the Augusta County Sheriff's Office said witnesses heard a loud crash just before 9 a.m. after military authorities reportedly lost communication with the jet.

Emergency responders were then alerted and located the crash site by noticing a cloud of thick smoke rising from a mountain side.

“There have been no reported injuries on the ground -- meaning no local residents have been injured as a result of the crash,” Virginia State Police said in a statement.

The town of Deerfield, where the 104th Fighter Wing craft out of the Westfield, Massachusetts Barnes Air National Guard Base crashed, is located a little more than 130 miles northwest of Richmond.
