The rate of unmarried couples having babies in the U.S. may be declining, but the rate of single women over the age of 35 having children is increasing.
Reuters reported that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday that there were 1.6 million births to unmarried women last year, the lowest in nearly a decade.
However, the CDC’s data also showed that there was a 27 percent increase in the number of unmarried women having babies between 40 and 44, during 2007 and 2012. Furthermore, the data computed that a 7 percent increase of single women between the ages of 35 to 39 also decided to have children without tying the knot.
The Tech Times noted that there has been a drop in birth rates overall in this country since the recession in 2009. And teen pregnancies have had the largest drop off, decreasing by almost a third between 2007 and 2012.
Therefore, the takeaways are that more couples under 35 are marrying before having children, woman over 35 are having kids without getting hitched and a lot of teens are deciding to wait to get married or mature, before they chose to have babies.
