New FDA approved drug could help those suffering from balding condition alopecia

Findings revealed that a new FDA-approved drug may be able to help patients suffering from a balding condition known as alopecia.

The drug was first used on mice at Columbia University Medical Center, and yielded successful results. Earlier this year the drug was tested on five men and seven women, all whom were suffering from alopecia, reported The Times of India.

The drug that was tested and used is called ruxolitinib. Many of those involved in the study began to see significant hair growth after a few months of using the drug. Although the drug worked for those suffering from alopecia, it is too early to determine if it will for patients suffering from other balding conditions.

One participant in the study, Brian, said he was amazed at the hair growth after suffering balding for years.

“Three or four large areas started to show hair growth. I was blown away,” Brian said.

According to Science World, the drug did not work for all of the participants in the study, but for the majority. Researchers such as Raphael Clynes of Columbia University Medical Center agreed that further study would be needed.

“We've only begun testing the drug in patients, but if the drug continues to be successful and safe, it will have a dramatic positive impact on the lives of people with this disease.”
