A new fashion company called Undercover Colors is developing a special kind of nail polish to help women detect date rape drugs that lead to sexual assault.
The nail polish will change color when exposed to date rape drugs such as Rohypnol, Xanax, and GHB. So, if a woman is wearing the polish, she can dip a finger in her drink to know if it is contaminated.
Undercover Colors was founded by four male students at North Carolina State University. Ankesh Madan, one of the creators, discussed the group’s inspiration for the project. “All of us have been close to someone who has been through the terrible experience,” Madan told Higher Education Works. He emphasized the importance of seeking preventative measures that can be incorporated into the everyday products of women.
“Our goal is to invent technologies that empower women to protect themselves from this heinous and quietly pervasive crime,” reads the company’s Facebook page. If you would like to donate to the company’s research fund, click here.
