A New York teenager died Friday morning in a crash while he was test driving a family friend's Lamborghini.

Police said 18-year-old Samuel Shepard was driving the expensive sports car on a country road in Mount Sinai shortly before 2:30 a.m. and lost control and violently collided with a guardrail, The Associated Press reports.

He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Michael Power, who owns the 2010 Lamborghini was taken to a nearby hospital, after surviving the car accident with non-life-threatening injuries.

Power is a family friend and after talking about the Lamborghini with Shepard, decided to let the teen taking it for a spin, notes Newsday. "I think it was probably just a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the kid, and this man chose to give him this opportunity," Det. Sgt. Michael Fitzharris said.

It isn't yet known how fast Shepard was driving the car, but Fitzharris noted that he "would suspect it was excessively fast."

Shepard's father, Gene Shepard, spoke with the newspaper and said that Lamborghinis had been his son's favorite car.

The teen had graduated this spring from Mount Sinai High School and his father said he planned to serve in the army before eventually becoming a police officer. "He had his whole future planned out."
