In an unexpected move, the National Football League reportedly has asked three potential performers for Super Bowl 2015 halftime show to pay to play.
Acts aren't usually paid to perform during the halftime show at the Super Bowl, instead hedging that album sales will shoot up after all the publicity. Well now it appears the NFL wants a piece of that sweet action.
According to people familiar with the matter who spoke with the Wall Street Journal, the league came up with three potential performers, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Rihanna, then floated the idea that they pony up some of their post-appearance income.
They could also provide some other form of financial contribution, but the insiders say that representatives' responses to the idea were not at all positive.
The NFL didn't comment on the matter, with spokeswoman Joanna Hunter only offering up that contact was confidential and the league is only looking "to put on the best possible show."
With the choice now appearing to be down to just those three performers, it sounds like one drunken fan who started a petition earlier in August will be disappointed. After a night of drinking a 33-year-old Dallas Cowboys fan decided that he wanted Weird Al Yankovic to perform and started a petition over it.
The Change.org petition has managed to get more than 125,000 signatures.
