Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are working together to bring Big Little Lies, the bestseller by Liane Moriarty, to the big screen. Their production companies snapped up the film rights to the novel.
Kidman’s Blossom Films and Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard combined forces to get the project and the hope is that they will take parts in the eventual film. According to Deadline, which first reported on the deal, Bruna Papandrea of Pacific Standard and Blossom’s Per Saari will co-produce with the two Oscar winners.
The novel was just released on July 29, notes Entertainment Weekly. It centers on a group of Australian mothers whose children all go to the same school. But a mishap with a broken heel clouds their relationship and ends up with murder.
Both Witherspoon, who took home her Oscar for Walk the Line, and Kidman, who won hers for The Hours, are interested in starring in the film, but it’s not clear which parts they will take. It sounds like this project is just getting started, as there’s no writer or director attached.
Witherspoon has been working hard on re-establishing herself as a strong star in films like Mud and the upcoming Wild. As for Kidman, she recently starred in The Railway Man with Colin Firth and Grace of Monaco. (Coincidentally, Witherspoon just worked with Firth too, in Devil’s Knot.)
