A patient at Mount Sinai hospital in New York City is being tested for the Ebola virus after displaying symptoms of the deadly disease.
WABC reported that the man, who recently traveled to West Africa, is now being tested for the disease after he experienced gastrointestinal problems related to Ebola.
CBS New York reported that the patient showed up at the emergency room on Monday morning and the hospital was placed on “strict isolation.”
“All necessary steps are being taken to ensure the safety of all patients, visitors and staff,” Mount Sinai hospital said in a statement. “We will continue to work closely with federal, state and city health officials to address and monitor this case, keep the community informed and provide the best quality care to all of our patients.”
There is no cure for the virus which is blamed for almost 900 deaths in Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Ebola is spread through human contact and is often fatal.
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has assured Americans that the risk for the virus spreading in the United States is minimal.
