Sony Pictures is heavily considering director Paul Feig, known for his work on Bridesmaids and The Heat, to direct Ghostbusters 3.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Feig has expressed some interest in directing the long delayed installment of the Ghostbusters franchise, but sources have insisted that no formal negotiations between the two parties have occurred, and there is apparently a sizable amount of logistical issues that must be ironed out before Feig could take the project.

However, the Hollywood Reporter’s sources insist that Feig is the top choice for the project, although Sony itself has declined to comment.

Ivan Reitman, the director of the first two films, was originally tapped to direct Ghostbusters 3, but dropped out in March. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, known for both The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street, had been rumored to be considered, but the veracity of these rumors has never been proven.

The script of the film was written by Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg, who previously wrote NBC’s The Office as well as Cameron Diaz’s Bad Teacher, but is undergoing serious rewrites due to the death of Harold Ramis (Egon) back in February.

Dan Aykroyd, according to the The Hollywood Reporter, has stated in the past that he will return to any future installment of the Ghostbusters series, but Bill Murray (who was just announced to be providing the voice of Baloo in Jon Favreau’s Jungle Book movie) has not committed.

According to Superhero Hype, the film will feature the original generation of Ghostbusters handing off their titles to a new generation of busters.

Feig, meanwhile, will be directing Spy, an upcoming comedy film starring frequent collaborator Melissa McCarthy, which is slated for a release in May 2015.
