It was only fitting that Paul McCartney play the final concert at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park last night. After all, the venue hosted the Beatles’ final commercial live show in 1966. While McCartney performed his typical setlist, he did throw in a nice surprise for fans.

During the show, McCartney performed a cover of Little Richard’s “Long Tall Sally,” which was the last song the Beatles played at Candlestick on Aug. 29, 1966. He rarely performs the song any longer and behind him, he displayed a never-before-seen image of the Beatles.

According to the McCartney team, the photo was taken by the late Jim Marshall, who was the only photographer who had official access to the show. The image will be highlighted in the new book The Haight: Love, Rock and Revolution (Insight Editions), which will be out on Oct. 14.

As for the rest of the show, it was standard operating procedure for McCartney. As SFGate noted in its review, most of the setlist featured the familiar Wings hits and new tracks from his NEW album, along with a few Beatles classics. McCartney also started the show late at 9 p.m., since the traffic was horrible outside the stadium and members of the audience weren’t in their seats yet.

“We got so pissed off, we never did it again,” McCartney joked about the ‘66 show, SFGate reported. “...It's sad to see the old place closing down, but we're going to close it down in style.”

McCartney also may have disappointed fans who wanted a “Last Night At Candlestick” T-shirt. The merchandise was all standard Out There tour shirts, leaving some fans outside the stadium to make their own shirts.

McCartney’s next show is in San Diego on Sept. 28.
