Authorities have said that the pier beneath the Pulaski Skyway in Jersey City, New Jersey caught fire on Friday.
According to ABC 7, the fire started just after 1 p.m. when debris fell from the structure.
The Associated Press noted that the over-80-year-old bridge has been under construction for some time, but it is not clear if the work being done contributed to the blaze. However, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation said that it is possible that the welding activity could have sparked the fire.
The fire was located on the base to one of the supports of the skyway.
There was no word of any reported injuries and a fireboat of marine firefighters arrived at the scene to extinguish the flames.
The skyway will reportedly be under construction for the next two years as the roadway deck is being replaced and the span is being refurbished.
Fire officials are working to investigate and determine the exact cause of the fire.
